Thanks, Captain Obvious....
Have you seen the Smart Car?

No?

Here's a photo (courtesy of the Smart Car website).....

Now, I live in Minnesota. You know, where it snows 9 months out of the year? This car makes no sense for Minnesota residents. While this may be great on gas mileage, I don't even want to know what it's like on icy roads.

Anyway, today in the news, it is determined that the Smart car performs poorly in crash tests.

Really?

You don't say?

I didn't need the crash test institute to tell me that! I could see it myself. There is nothing there to help prevent injury to the driver and passenger. If you drive this car and run into something, the engine will be in your lap! Here is a photo of the car, in a simulated crash, which I found on the Institute for Highway Safety website:

Like I said, I don't need a simulated crash test to tell me that this car isn't the best for me.

And I don't even want to know what the Big Guy would look like in that car.

I was HIGHLY entertained that this was the top news story this morning.

Really?, you think it might not be safe? Wow, never would have guessed that, I mean it is only the size of a truck tire, I'm sure it's COMPLETELY safe.

I saw this this morning as well. Both my Hubs and I had a good laugh too - we've always called them "economical," because it saves you the price of a coffin.

Especially in Texas, where the state automobile is a Suburban.

There's actually a teenager who has one in our neighborhood. I'm sure the parents figured it would be good for school and back, but I shudder to think what could happen.

My teenagers will get the vintage Suburban. If they can't afford the gas to go far, even better.

Oh wow! My one son just told me he wants a small car. I know it won't be this one! They look like little cars you would rent on a island somewhere instead of a scooter.

I've seen those... they look like a toy car... I dont see how there is ANY safety in those at all..

I can remember my dad always telling me he wanted me in a STURDY car for safety... yeah, this new car wouldnt pass for that!

You're so funny!!! Well here in Oki, I've seen a few of these cute little toy cars running around and I must say that I was just telling my husband that I thought it would be fun to have one. He said, "Yeah, uh-huh." I guess I didn't give it much thought that if we had a super-typhoon it'd get blown away and I'd never see it again. Something to think about when I see the little buggers zoomin' around town!

The concept of the Smart car is great but the reality is much different. Yes it will save gas but is a good trade off for safety. Car manufacturer's have said for many years that to make cars with high gas mileage the weight needs to taken out of the car. The weight of the car is all the safety features.

I know a few people that have these smart cars and I was always amazed when they made it through a snowstorm to get to work. People in SUV's have a tough time seeing a motorcycles. Those that ride motorcycles understand that and take precautions to stay visible. Now these smart cars are not much better, but I do not believe those that drive the smart car realize how invisible they are to SUV's.

Great right up. For more discussion on the Smart Car and other topics check out www.thehamburgpost.blogspot.com
