Life in a Small Town....
I was out taking some pictures of the fall colors recently (they are almost at peak here in MN). Here is a picture or two....

Anyway, on the way back into town, I noticed a sign: Pumpkins & Squash ahead.

I saw the two hay racks on the side of the road and decided to stop. The racks were filled with acorn squash ($1 each! A DOLLAR!), gourds and mini pumpkins. The big pumpkins were gone.

The best part about a small town?

The honor system.

A small box to drop your coins.

No cashier.
No farmer watching the stand.

Just a hay rack and a yellow box with a hole drilled in it for your coins.

I walked away with 3 mini pumpkins and 3 gourds all for $1.

Yes. I paid. though it is tempting to just help yourself, isn't it?

WOW...seems like I have forgotten to take in the sights that Minnesota has to offer in the fall....I got married in the fall for the reasons you have pointed out!

I think this is why it the honor system works. It's not that it never crosses your mind to walk away with your stuff; it's because you don't want to be responsible for it ending. You don't want to walk by tomorrow and find out the squash and stuff is gone to be replaced by a sign that says, "Yesterday some jerk stole a bunch of stuff so we can't do the honor system anymore." Ouch. Thus, we pony up and are we ever really SURE nobody is watching (smile).

I thought of your blog post this weekend when one of my Facebook friends posted the lyrics to "Small Town" by JCM (or was he just JC then? I cant remember what songs go with which moniker!). Anyway, there ARE some advantages to living in a small town - and a few disadvantages like folks being stuck in "small town" mode and mentality. But I guess that's another blog post entirely and you don't want one on your comments. This one is getting way outta hand now anyway ... basically just wanted you to know you had a Southerner reading your blog on a regular basis and relating to it in the real world of FB!
